The star has donated the complete sum of his £25,000 Mercury Prize prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to protect the Britain's grassroots concert spaces.

The star was awarded the cheque on 16 October as his new release his work was chosen as the best record of the last 12 months.

Fender has chosen to donate the funds to the MVT, in appreciation of the essential function small stages fulfilled in his early career.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the gigs I played around the region, and beyond, when I was beginning," remarked the artist. "These spaces are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these venues have ceased operations – roughly 16% of the total UK scene.

In the last year, top acts including the band Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all backed the MVT in its efforts to keep the scene afloat, by applying a small levy to their ticket prices, which supports independent venues.

Fender also joined in, generating more than £100,000 on his live tour to support numerous local spots across Britain.

The donation supported venues that were facing possible closure due to challenges caused by water damage, fires and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Other venues obtained financial assistance in improving amenities and sound and lighting systems that helped performers and concertgoers.

"The idea that funds from shows in large arenas supports the independent spots, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just common sense," Fender has stated.
