A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
