Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" comment after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
